I love Etsy, it’s such a strong marketplace for handmade items, I’ve tried so many different tactics and figured out how to succeed on Etsy
What is Etsy? Etsy is an amazing online storefront that has reached millions of buyers and created sustainable businesses for thousands of sellers. It’s been going strong for over a decade and is widely recognized and trusted, making it a safe and simple space to start selling online.
With that said, selling on Etsy has its challenges. Visibility is one. If you thought you could just upload photos of your latest creations, sit back with a cup of tea and wait for sales to roll in, you’re going be disappointed. Etsy is well-known and established, which is great, but it’s also crowded. The chances of getting your shop “discovered” with no marketing efforts on your part are slim.
Let’s put it this way: There are approximately 1.6 million people currently selling on Etsy.
There are probably hundreds and even thousands of people who are selling products similar to yours and if you don’t put in some work to brand and market your business, you won’t do much selling.
This isn’t meant to be negative. It’s just important to know what you’re getting yourself into. With some work and persistence, you can build a profitable business and have fun while you’re at it. Learn how I was able to break through and make some real cash!
1. Don’t Rush Through It!
In your excitement to get your shop up and running, don’t make the mistake of not filling out all your information, your store description and anything else that helps people get to know your shop. Etsy has a variety of tools that help sellers, and it behooves you to take advantage of all of them!
This means creating an attractive banner that fits your brand, or paying someone else to do it. It means putting a lot of thought into your name. It means researching your niche and carefully pricing your products.
In other words, do your homework and take your time.
2. Upload Professional Quality Photos
Pictures should be crisp, sharp and the product should be clear. While artistic photos that reflect your brand are great, be sure that the product is visible and takes center stage. Don’t upload photos that are grainy, dark or blurry, ever. One of the best items I ever bought to help me take photos was a Mini Photo Studio. It’s pretty cheap and it comes with different color backdrops and even the professional light needed! If you want to succeed on Etsy you have to have amazing picture. You can check it out at Amazon.
3. Run A Professional Shop
Just as you would any brick and mortar business, keep a professional and customer-centered mindset. Fulfill orders on time, keep all correspondence professional. Deal with problems immediately and courteously. Always add that special touch that makes people enjoy doing business with you. Under Shop Settings > Info and Appearance You can actual include a custom message when someone places an which. Which means when someone buys from you they will get their order confirmation email and your special message will be at the bottom. Take care of your customers, and they will take care of you.
4. Market Your Business
It’s important to understand that marketing your business doesn’t mean spamming people with posts about your products. Yes, you want to market your shop on Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram, for example, but you don’t want to do it in a pushy way.
Use social media to attract an audience. Talk to them, learn about them and engage with them. Create a blog and post to it regularly. Create content related to your products and content that your ideal customer will find useful.
Use visual sites like Instagram and Pinterest and learn as much as you can about how each platform works and how to best market products on these channels. Consider utilizing tools such as video to create excitement about your products. Run contests on social media periodically to increase followers and build relationships with your audience. Post unboxing videos and give people insight into who you are, why you do what you do, and what goes into your creations and products. Showing your items in the behind the scenes view is a great way to succeed on Etsy, it makes people feel more connected to you and your itemsWith some work and persistence, you can build a profitable business and have fun while you're at it. 5. Choose the Correct Tags
This is one of the most important steps. If you are marketing using Etsy Advertising you HAVE to make sure you are choosing the correct tags aka keywords. At the bottom of each listing you create you can choose your tags. You need to be as specific as possible and try to think about what you would search if looking for this item. For example if you are selling a bottle opener for mens. You wouldn’t want to put “cool gifts” or “birthday gifts”,. The reason for that is because that is too broad and you can end up spending so much more money by putting in and paying for tags an are irrelevant to what you are selling. Check out the picture below to see an example for what I put down for a bottle opener for men.
6. Be A Part Of The Community
Get to know other Etsy sellers and be active in the community. It’s one of the unexpected rewards of joining the Etsy seller community. Have fun and get to know people. Share the products of other sellers, and find ways to cross-promote with relevant shops. Be involved and generous, and you’ll grow your community and your sales.
These are just a few ways to succeed on Etsy. Remember that it can take some time to build a customer base and to gain visibility, so be patient and consistent.
